Do Video Games Cause Aggression

Do Video Games Cause Aggression? Over the past few years there has been a multitude of complaints about the violent content of video games and it has been suggested that they can make players more aggressive in real life. The fact that video games are getting more and more elaborate and violent can’t be denied – game designers strive to make images more realistic and show the injuries the characters get or their suffering in agony. However, blaming games for aggression outside the virtual world appears to be ungrounded and exaggerated. Firstly, researches conducted on this issue seem to contradict each other. Although some studies show that video games affect people’s emotional state, others claim that their influence upon the players is the same as that of books or films. Moreover, according to Patrick Kierkegaard from the University of Essex, England, there is no obvious link between real-world violence statistics and the invention of video games. He argued that with millions of sales of violent games, the world should be seeing an epidemic of violence, but violence, particularly among the young, has declined. Its true that notorious school shootings in America have been committed by young game players. However, the overwhelming majority of teenage game players are law-abiding citizens. According to 2001 U.S. Surgeon Generals report, the strongest risk factors for school shootings centred in mental stability and the quality of home life, not media exposure. Thus, there is no evidence to suggest that video games are the primary factor that breeds aggression among young people. The moral panic over violent video games misdirects energy away from eliminating the actual causes of youth violence and allows problems to fester further on.

The Rise of the Mass Media free essay sample

The Rise of the Mass Media Industrial societies not only produce and distribute goods and services, they also produce and distribute information and entertainment. Industrialization not only led to mass production, it also created mass media. In this part of the chapter we will examine the growth of these media and situ ¬ate this within the development of a capitalist industrial society. The Print RevolutionThe earliest known book was printed in China in the year 868 and metal type was in use in Korea at the beginning of the fifteenth century, but it was in Germany around the year 1450 that a printing press using movable metal type was invented. Capitalism turned printing from an invention into an industry. Right from the start, book printing and publishing were organized on capitalist lines. The biggest sixteenth-century printer, Plantin of Antwerp, had twenty-four printing presses and employed more than a hundred workers. Only a small fraction of the population was liter ¬ate, but the production of books grew at an extraordinary speed. The immediate effect of printing was to increase the circulation of works that were already popular in a hand ¬written form, while less popular works went out of cir ¬culation. Publishers were interested only in books that would sell fairly quickly in sufficient numbers to cover the costs of production and make a profit. Thus, while printing enormously increased access to books by making cheap, high-volume production possible, it also reduced choice.The great cultural impact of printing was that it facili ¬tated the growth of national languages. Most early books were printed in Latin, the language of educated people, but the market for Latin was limited, and in its pursuit of larger markets the book trade soon produced translations into the national languages emerging at this time. Printing indeed played a key role in standardizing and stabilizing these languages by fixing them in print, and producing dictionaries and grammar books. Latin became obsolete as national literature s were established in the sixteenth century.

Sociology in Law Enforcement Essay Example

Sociology in Law Enforcement Essay Sociology is simply the study of society, while law enforcement concerns the prevention of and struggle against crime within the same society.   For effective law enforcement, therefore, the study of society may provide invaluable information.   So as to eradicate the roots of crime, this information is essential.   After all, by understanding why crime takes place within society, law enforcement agencies will be able to enhance their efforts to fight crime.There is a branch of sociology referred to as the sociology of law, investigating the interaction of society with law.   This sub-discipline of the study of society may help law enforcement agencies to understand the effect that they have on society, in addition to the practices and procedures that are most practicable in a given situation.   Seeing that social change affects law enforcement, the sociology of law may explain the interaction while also describing the kinds of laws that are necessary at any given time (â⠂¬Å"Sociology of Law,† 2007).   As an example, law enforcement agencies may surely see the need to develop new laws during a time of revolution in a nation.   Sociology of law would help law enforcement agencies in effectively doing so.Another important use of sociology to law enforcement agencies is the understanding it provides about the kinds of situations that lead people to commit crime.   By increasing their knowledge about when and where crimes may happen, law enforcement agencies would naturally enhance their effectiveness.   Hence, sociology provides law enforcement agencies with a number of theories of crime, explaining the situations and the kinds of people that may typically be related to criminal activities.   Although the theories of crime presented by sociologists do not happen to be foolproof, they may guide law enforcement agencies in their work.   The following section describes and analyzes a theory of crime and deviance in relation to a few othe r theories presented by sociologists to help law enforcement agencies improve their understanding of crime, criminals, and the practices of the agencies in dealing with the same.   Moreover, these theories may assist law enforcement agencies in developing better practices.Deviant Behavior in the Light of the Conflict TheoryConflict theory is based on the idea that the main causes of crime and deviance are the economic and social differences among members of a society, prompting the have-nots to act out, if not to rob the haves.   According to this theory, criminal law and the entire criminal justice system tend to be favorable toward the wealthy and the powerful elites, while the governmental policies are aimed at controlling only the needy and poor members of society.   Moreover, the theory assumes that the entire criminal justice structure is aimed at compelling all members of society to accept the standards of good behavior and morality that are created by the rich and the powerful.   There is a focus on separation between the haves and the have-nots, so as to protect the haves from physical attacks by the have-nots, and also to protect them from being robbed.   In the process, however, the rights of the poor and needy people could be ignored.   The middle class, on the other hand, enjoys the legal rights of the elites by siding with them.   These people believe that they might be able to rise in rank by backing up the status quo (â€Å"Conflict,† 2005).The simplistic conflict theory has been explained further thus:†¦[S]treet crimes, even minor monetary ones are routinely punished quite severely, whilelarge scale financial and business crimes are treated much more leniently.   Theft of atelevision might receive a longer sentence than stealing millions through illegal businesspractices.   William Chambliss, in a classic essay â€Å"The Saints and the Roughnecks,† comparedthe outcomes for two groups of adolescent misbehave rs.   The first, a lower class group ofboys, was hounded by the local police and labeled by teachers as delinquents and futurecriminals, while the upper-middle class boys were equally deviant, but their actions werewritten off as youthful indiscretions and learning experiences (â€Å"Conflict†).Although there is truth to the conflict theory, it is only partial.   Of a certainty, there are countless people counted among the rich and the powerful who have engaged in deviant behaviors.   What is more, they have not found the law to be lax toward them.   As an example, both of President George W. Bush’s daughters have been in trouble with the law (Montgomery, 2001).   The daughter of the President’s brother, Florida Governor Jeb Bush, has also been arrested for deviant behavior (â€Å"Jeb,† 2002).   The conflict theory does not apply in their cases.   Nor does it apply in the case of Enron and Worldcom – rich businesses that should have b een untouched by the laws of the land if the conflict theory were entirely true.Although there may be instances where the conflict theory correctly explains deviant behavior, it is obvious that this theory cannot be applied to all places in the world at all times.   There are many nations in the world where corruption is the law of the land, and unfairness is the norm.   In the developing regions of the world, in particular, the have-nots may rob the haves or simply act out because they are disturbed by the unfairness that is mete out to them.   However, it is not correct to understand deviant behavior only in the light of the conflict theory.   If we are to believe that it is conflict theory alone that explains deviant behavior in human beings, we would not have examples of the Bush daughters and Enron to consider.As mentioned before, there are many theories to explain deviant behavior.   The cultural transmission or the differential associations theory, for instance, may compete with the conflict theory in explaining deviance.   According to the cultural transmission theory, all kinds of behaviors, including deviant behavior, are learned.   Furthermore, the young and therefore more impressionable learners of deviance may have developed close relationships with their deviant teachers.   With increasing contacts with deviant teachers, the young learners of deviance engage in increasingly deviant behaviors (â€Å"Sociological Theories†).The cultural transmission theory does not rule out the possibility that the children of the rich and the powerful may engage in deviant behaviors because they may have had deviant teachers.   The conflict theory rules out this possibility entirely with its assumption that the societal norms are established by the rich and the powerful, so therefore they cannot possibly go against their own rules.   As explained previously, this assumption of the conflict theory is not true, seeing that the rich and the powerful are also known to go against the societal norms, which they should have established for themselves and by themselves.   The conflict theory is also not true one hundred percent in places where laws are created on the basis of unfairness and corruption.   Even in such places, it is known that there are poor people that try to work hard and honestly, despite the unfairness that is dealt out to them.   In short, all people in ‘deviant’ places may not engage in deviant behaviors, even if the rich and the powerful have corrupted the government with bribes, etc.Yet another theory that conflicts with the conflict theory is the social control theory that explains why people may not engage in deviant behaviors.   According to this theory, individuals may follow the societal norms because of their connecting social bonds (â€Å"Sociological Theories†).   In other words, they may refuse to engage in deviant behaviors for the following reasons:(1) attachm ent a measure of the connectedness between individuals;(2) commitment a measure of the stake a person has in the community;(3) involvement a measure of the time/energy a person is spending on activities that arehelpful to the community;(4) belief a measure of the persons support for the morals and beliefs of the community(â€Å"Sociological Theories†).If all poor and needy folks in an unfair society were to follow the societal norms because of their social contacts, the conflict theory would once again be rendered meaningless.   It may be that some underprivileged folks with weak social bonds would engage in deviant behaviors in a corrupt society.   In that case, however, the conflict theory would only apply to that small group of people.   In actuality, such a group may be existent.   Theoretically, however, it is possible for that group never to exist.   Thus, the conflict theory may actually apply only in the cases of disgruntled, underprivileged folks who tr uly believe in righting the wrongs with wrongs.   It would not apply in a corrupt society where underprivileged folks would like to work hard and honestly.   And, neither would it apply in societies where the rich and the powerful are not exempt from the law.   Therefore, the conflict theory is a naà ¯ve theory, which, like most theories, does not explain reality in its entirety.Sociological Research and Law EnforcementWhile none of the theories of crime presented by sociologists may explain the causes of crime and deviance in all possible situations and among all kinds of people, it is essential for law enforcement officers to consider them while hunting for suspects.   Furthermore, law enforcement agencies must be cognizant of latest sociological research on crime.   This would help law enforcement agencies to develop effective policies.As an example, Button et al. (2007) have presented sociological research on fighting public sector crime by the employment of â€Å"sp ecially trained civilian personnel.†Ã‚   Given that fraud and corruption may occur within law enforcement agencies as well, these civilians are â€Å"tasked to prevent, investigate and secure sanctions against fraudsters,† even if the fraudsters happen to be in the police force (Button et al.).   The government of the United Kingdom is already trying out this new method of preventing crime in the public sector.   Button et al. describe the entire process of employing the method.   Hence, any law enforcement agency in the globe, upon evaluating that the solution is viable for itself, may apply the method successfully to prevent and catch crime in the public sector.Ruggiero (2007) has also published a sociological research to help law enforcement agencies in their performance.   The research is on white collar crime, including state and corporate offences that the law enforcement agencies typically find hard to detect.   By including detailed definitions of whit e collar criminals and power crimes, alongside descriptions of a number of white collar crimes with varying degrees of illegitimacy and consequences – the researcher has performed a rather useful task for law enforcement officers, who may now use the information to enhance their understanding of white collar crime.ConclusionThe relationship between sociology and law enforcement is inevitable as well as indispensable.   Law enforcement agencies are always dealing with the society at large, and sociological research helps them to understand the effect of the law and the practices of the agencies on the people.   Additionally, sociological research may assist law enforcement chiefs and officers to target crime and criminals by their correct definitions.   Even so, as the analysis of the theories of crime and deviance suggests, all scholarly works and theories may not help law enforcement agencies to understand crime in all its manifestations.   Criminals may turn out to be as creative as the theorists.   Hence, law enforcement agencies may not depend on sociological research and theories of crime and deviance as definite maps to hunt criminals.   Still, these theories in addition to sociological research may provide guidance to the law enforcement agencies not only in the prevention of and struggle against crime, but also in developing better practices and policies for the same.   After all, sociology of law is an entire area of study to examine the effects of myriad laws on society at large.;

Reading this guide is a must if you want to make your argumentative essay flawless, which is why we recommend that you read this one very carefully. Without further ado, let’s learn something new about microeconomics: Microeconomics is all about the study of particular actors using economic reasoning to act upon their economy-related decisions. In simple words, microeconomics refers to the study of the behaviors of these individual actors. These individuals are, most of the time, decision makers for their professional lives, or for someone else’s business. Economics is a part of the â€Å"Worldly Philosophy† that concerns materialistic matters as well as the material well-being of the people living in this world. Any day-to-day activities that are correlated with wealth, earning and spending income, and resources form economics. Contrary to popular belief, natural forces are not the only factor that influences the climate. Microeconomics plays critical role in this. Due to the greenhouse concentrated gasses – such as carbon dioxide and methane – surface temperatures on the Earth increases. Geologists unveiled this scientific evidence discovering that the accumulated levels of climate change spiked dramatically during the last few decades, with an increase in technology and industries growing. In 1776, Adam Smith wrote a book on microeconomics â€Å"An Inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations† which was published when capitalism was initially evolving. In his book, Smith described an efficient way of limited resources distributing, which he called an economic system of unfettered pursuit of self-interest. Kahneman, known as one of the first scientists to make experiments on rats, attempted to find out whether the economic theories are applicable to humans. In fact, he won a Nobel Prize for his research, which gave strong impetus to the development of microeconomics. The study was conducted using rates in mazes. These rats were offered two rewards, water, and root beer. Obtaining water was easy peazy. But to get rewarded with root beer, rats had to undergo longer mazes, and had to bear electric shocks. Despite all difficulties rats were running for beer. These experiments led to the assumption that humans also take these kinds of decisions to obtain something better. Over the centuries, microeconomics has expanded so much that it’s almost impossible for a particular individual to become an expert in all aspects of it. That’s why economists divide this specialization in narrow portions of the subject, and that is why the terms â€Å"microeconomic† and â€Å"macroeconomics† are separated. Microeconomic models that are abstractions from reality are built upon assumptions. But these models allow individuals to gather information by analyzing real world events, and timelines. If real life events support the hypotheses, they are seen as accurate and are applied in economics. But if they’re inaccurate, they’re considered to be â€Å"biases†, and are announced wrong. There are two types of economic thoughts that are classified as positive economics and normative economics. Positive economics describe actor’s goals, and aims, along with what is being done; whereas, normative economics explains what should be done. For example, finishing your education is an economic goal, which comes from normative economics i.e. which you should do   to score better in your professional life. Positive economics, on the other hand, is more occupied with the economic performance or the goal’s achievements. Economics can never be separated from politics. Law, public opinion, regulations and government policies, all deliver an effect on the achievement of goals and their interpretation.That’s why economics has often been used to spread political agendas throughout the world and is still used for the same purpose. Education also plays a vital role in enhancing the growth of microeconomics. When President Lincoln passed the Morrill Act in 1861, it allowed the working class to obtain higher education. This led to the achievements of economic goals such as equitable distribution of income, economic freedom, and security. Bride Wars and Year One

They get the wedding planner of their dreams, Marion St Clair who turns out to be the wedding planner of their nightmares and accidently books their weddings on the same day! Neither of them will agree to change their date, so they become enemies. As the tag line quotes â€Å"Even best friends can’t share the same wedding day. † The cake knives are out, but how will everything turn out? â€Å"Year One† is an American film also released in 2009, it is an example of a romantic adventure comedy. It is about two accident-prone Palaeolithic warriors. Jack Black who plays â€Å"Zed â€Å" is a prehistoric would-be hunter he gets kicked out of the tribe in the forest for eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. His side kick, â€Å"Oh† played by Michael Cera is a gatherer and turns up to â€Å"try† and save him. The film is about their adventures set in the prehistoric era trying to save their two friends Maya and Eema. Both girls are from their former tribe and have been captured and sold into slavery, on their travels Zed and Oh meet Biblical characters on route to the city of Sodom. Do they succeed in saving them? Although they are of the same genre they couldn’t be more different films. â€Å"Bride Wars† is set in the 21st century, whereas â€Å"Year One† is set in Palaeolithic era, this means there is a very big contrast between them. Bride Wars gives the impression of being a comedy from the expressions on both the actors’ faces. They are both looking straight into each other’s eyes showing a devious look with a comic smirk, in a horror film there would be no trace of a comic smirk. â€Å"Year One† has the aesthetics of a comedy with Jack Black’s expression being apprehensive and confused, his eyebrow is raised. Michael Cera’s facial expression is one of worried eyes which suggests he is just merely a side kick, and doesn’t really have a say in what Jack is going to do next! â€Å"Bride Wars† gives the impression of comedy on the poster, you would never expect brides to have a â€Å"war† or the weapons to be cake knives. Year One† suggests that it is set in prehistoric times, the first year of man, but the title doesn’t really have a comic sense about it, I believe this is why the director cast Jack Black to star in it, he is a very well known for his comedy roles. People will know that a film with Jack as the main character is going to be entertaining and funny so will choose to see it on that basis. The advertising poster for â€Å"Bride Wars† implies some type of confrontation in the plot. In â€Å"Bride Wars† the actors Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway have a look in their eyes of pure distain. Anne Hathaway is a popular actress with female audiences of all ages. She has featured in many other films such as Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted, Devil wears Prada and Brokeback Mountain, again she has a good following. In the poster both young ladies are dressed in wedding dresses this helps to emphases the term â€Å"bride† to look more potent, The actors have their hair down, which suggest a fight is about to break out, as brides nearly always have their hair up in an â€Å"updo†. The poster for â€Å"Year One† doesn’t imply a lot, being dressed in animal cloth relates to the title of the film and lets the audience know that this movie is set in pre-historic times. This leads me to think they might have gotten lost in an adventure, their body language looks like they have just seen something that is confusing or worrying to them. The colours used in each poster have soft tones, nothing potent or eye catching. Except the titles as this is what grabs the audience’s attention as they walk past. â€Å"Bride Wars† uses the colour theme of white and cream, these colours are usually associated with weddings e. g. purity, virgin brides, and wedding dresses, this again emphases the term â€Å"Bride. Year One’s theme is a desert landscape with a blue sky, this suggests it’s a hot day and they might be lost. The actors are the main focus of these posters; this suggests that the films revolve around them. The tag lines are intriguing, the tag line for Bride Wars suggests a confrontation within the film, and the tag line for â€Å"Year One† doesn’t give any clues to the plot of the film. This makes the person reading the poster want to learn more about these tag lines and what happens in the film, these help to grab the audience’s attention to hopefully go and see the film to find out more about them. The bold text in the â€Å"Year One† poster against the desert background makes the text stand out in the poster and catch people eye as they see it. The â€Å"Bride Wars† text on the word bride is similar to the text used on wedding invitations and further relates back to the film title. I think both posters have a target audience. Bride Wars is aimed at female teenagers and also would be appealing to female adults as it is about love and marriage. It is a feminine film, these are sometimes referred to as â€Å"chick flicks. † Year One is more of a teenagers film, not quite as girly as Bride Wars so might appeal to a wider audience. Teenagers are big fans of comedies and new movies that have just been released, they feel they can relate to them as they are light hearted and not serious. These posters inform their intended audience about the film, they try to entice them with intriguing tag lines that make the reader interested and wanting to see the film, and as they say â€Å"curiosity killed the cat. † They also inform people about the name, age certificate, genre, actors, and director, trying to persuade them in every way they can to see their film, to make it a success. In conclusion the posters are about as different as the films, â€Å"Year One† gives very little away about what is going to happen in the film so people will be curious to find out more, and perhaps research the film or discuss with friends what it’s about. Word of mouth is the best advert so getting people to talk about the film is a main goal for the poster. On the other hand the poster for â€Å"Bride Wars† lets you know the plot of the film, so when people see it they can make an instant decisions whether it interests them or not. Seeing two brides holding knives makes your imagination run and you just want to know what is going to happen. Both posters have a different target market, which explains why they are so different as they are tailored to appeal to different audiences. The posters have to grab and get the attention and curiosity of the people that they are aimed at and ultimately encourage them to want to go and see the film. Hopefully after seeing the film they will relay their experiences and enjoyment to other people and that will entice them to see the film too!
